19th Mai 1919 was an important day for the beginning of the liberation of Istanbul and Anatolia from the Western Occupation of the country at the beginning of the 20th Century.
On the 16th Mai of 1919 Atatürk left Istanbul for Samsun, with the ship named 'Bandırma'. (from the page: http://www.tbmm.gov.tr)
It was a movement of the people and not the monarch family. The monarch family Ottomans wanted to have money and protection from the Colonialists and nothing more. And the country was under occupation. France and England have had enough soldiers from their colonies to send to everywhere in the world. Actually it was a smart plan but it didn t work.
The indepence struggles of Turkey have animated other countries to give fight against
imperialism.
The fight is not over, but got more complicated. It is no more enthusiasm by the people. Because they want to forget the history and watch TV and eat chips...:-)
I am still enthusiactic in an anachronistic way because I have lived abroad the last couple of years...
