The book I am still reading now has the name 'K.R.Eissler, Freud und Wagner-Jauregg vor der Kommission zur Erhebung militaerischer Pflichtverletzungen), Löcker Verlag, Wien 2007' I don t know if this book exists also in English. It is about a torture case by using elektrotherapy in a cruel manner for war veterans in an hospital in Vienna after World War 1. There is enough material in the book for a novel or a movie.
There was a legal action against the chief doctor (Dr.Wagner-Jauregg)in charge at the moment of these tortures. The court has also asked Dr. Sigmund Freud as an expert in this field to give his opinion about this case. But the problem is that the process has taken another shape than it should be, in my view. Instead of finding out the truth about the claims made, the court tries to bring 'justice' to another, more difficult problem, namely if classical Vienna School is right or not about the treatment of the veterans with psychological problems. I mean that mustn t be the duty of a court... One couldn't solve the problem in a juridical process.
Dr.Wagner-Jauregg and his polish assistant Dr.Kozlowski consider most of these men as 'simulators.' It means that these people are not really ill they just don t want to go to war, thus a little bit exorcism with modern pain machines wan t harm to get these 'milksops' disciplined again.
And Dr. Wagner-Jauregg tries to defend his assistant by saying:
'He was very eager for success, but he didn t want to harm anybody, he just wanted to have quick success. And he thought he would be more successful if he treats the genitals of these men. I have told him, this has no use.'
Otherwise Kozlowski was a man of total submission to Wagner-Jauregg, thus Wagner-Jauregg should have been thought why don t make him happy by letting him play a little bit... These ill people were anyway not important people, just like having rats in the lab...They were even worse than rats, they were softies trying not to go back to war...One of them was a Jew, Walter Kauder. The protagonist of this story. ( Jews were worse than anything anyway for these people, I mean the people of kind of Wagner-Jauregg and the sort of...Dr.W-J. wanted to be a Nazi, but the party didn t allow him this, because he was once married to a jewish woman, thus he was 'spoiled.')
The year was 1917 if I am not wrong, but you see there was already a Nazi mentality. I mean it is not true that 'national socialism' was only a rupture in the history with no prehistory and afterwards... This is not true.
It was also a little bit irritating to me, that Eissler tries to show the psychoanalysis as the right alternative to these sadist torture cases... The question mustn't be 'torture' or 'psychoanalysis', but 'torture or not torture'. Even if that time was not the best time for applying advanced psychotherapies on war veterans, one can try to solve the problem if there was cruelty or not. And there was cruelty obviously.
I mean take the sentences of Wagner-Jauregg on his assistant. These sentences are disgusting in my view... It is clear that there was no intention about science or therapy, just the will to discipline the 'softies.' This mustn t be the duty of a doctor, even if he (Kozlowski) loved to play sadistic games as a loyal slave to his master. (Wagner-Jauregg)
