Virtual Life gets a bird The Seagull MARTI
For the word 'Martı' in Turkish I have found the english word 'seagull' in the dictionary. But I am very suspicious of dictionaries.(There were also words like 'mew' and 'seamew' and 'gull')
I know that this animal calls 'Möve' in German and Tchehov ( the Russian poet) has written a play with the name of this animal. So I think now you have understood the animal I am talking about. Additional to this explanation there is a link to the sound of 'larus minutus'. I think 'minutus' means 'small'.
I have never thought about seagulls in my life actually till now. And I am doing this for a while but I was too lazy to read something about this animal.
There is a song of Tom Waits (San Diego Serenade) from 1974 and he sings there
'I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long.' And I liked this sentence actually very much. This is exactly how I feel when I am writing now about Istanbul.
I feel myself like a stranger in my hometown. But at the same time it is a beginning, a new beginning for me.
I would never see and would never write about seagulls if I were not in Vienna 'too long.' Because there are no seagulls in Vienna as there is not a sea in Vienna. So you don t hear the sound of this bird all of the time and you don t see them all of the time. I liked them very much by the time. When I was a child I didn t notice them like now.
I liked them now more after Vienna. I have another consciousness now.
There is too much grey in this town, too much concrete, ugly buildings and these birds are the only 'still beautiful' reminants of a time which was better than now, I think in Istanbul.
The Heart of Saturday Night, 1974
2.San Diego Serenade
I never saw the morning 'til I stayed up all night
I never saw the sunshine 'til you turned out the light
I never saw my hometown until I stayed away too long
I never heard the melody, until I needed a song.
I never saw the white line, 'til I was leaving you behind
I never knew I needed you 'til I was caught up in a bind
I never spoke 'I love you' 'til I cursed you in vain,
I never felt my heartstrings until I nearly went insane.
I never saw the east coast 'til I move to the west
I never saw the moonlight until it shone off your breast
I never saw your heart 'til someone tried to steal,
tried to steal it away
I never saw your tears until they rolled down your face.
